Massively multiplayer online RPG

An online role-playing game where your character shares a persistent world with thousands of other players. You level up through quests and combat, and the biggest challenges, such as raids, require coordinating with other people as a group.

History

    Origin

    MMORPGs as understood today began with Meridian 59 (1996). Earlier forerunners include MUD1 (1978), in text, and Neverwinter Nights (1991), the first fully graphical one.

    Ultima Online popularises the genre; the term MMORPG is credited to its creator, Richard Garriott.
